"MEDICARE for the Chakmas" is a health specific initiative aimed at meeting the health care needs and challenges of the Chakmas living in far flung, remote areas in one of India's North-East states called Mizoram.

Like elsewhere, the Chakams living in the state of Mizoram are backward, neglected, discriminated, and often their woes have been overshadowed by other major issues that plague the Chakmas worlwide.

Just as a brief introductory note, there are around one lakh Chakmas in this north-eatern state of Mizoram. As a relegious, and linguistic minority in the state the Chakmas have been given an autonomous setup under Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution which provides them some amount of autonomy for self-governance.

Unfortunately, major parts of the Chakma inhabited areas have been excluded from this "autonomous" area for unknown reasons, and those who live outside the autonomous area are the most deprived and backward of the lot. Illiteracy, appaling health conditions, backwardness runs deep into their lives. The dreadful malaria and other disesed run havoc almost throughout the year. And, children are the most vulnerable of the lot. In the absence of any proper health care machinery, the Chakmas live in a "death trap". And, these areas in the districts of Aizawl, Mamit, Lunglei and other Chakma-inhabited areas constitute the neediest pockets of the states.

The specific target of thie initiative is at tackling the dreaded malaria; reaching out to the remotest of places to deliver health care facilities; and among other things, to bring awareness among the tribal population on sanitation and health measures are the aims of the project; engaging/initiating community participation in the project.
